I only read the first part of this, but I realized I had the exact same reaction. I just heard a Honda Accord commercial and the voice sounded familiar. After a while I realized it was Kevin Spacey, and after checking I found this to be true. It reminded me of hearing the voice of a very big actor or actress as the voiceover in several commercials a while ago. After a few minutes I remembered it was Julia Roberts, but I had NO IDEA what brand she was advertising, because like you, the whole time I was trying to figure out if it really was Julia Roberts. I just ran the search "Julia Roberts commercial" on Google and I found your article. If not for you telling me I never would have even remembered the brand, just Julia Roberts lowering herself to a voiceover. I mean, come on, if you're going to go to the trouble of getting her, at least get your money's worth by giving her some facetime. They wasted their money, and Julia Roberts lost some dignity. But this kind of stupidity is what we've come to expect from AOL.

I've often caught myself trying to recognize the voiceover during an ad. But I never seem to remember the ad.

Also, in the "you've always wondered" department, there's an interesting article about advertising here. Suggests that anthropomorphizing brands in commercials doesn't work as giving the product a human side, that it falls on deaf ears.
