Nintendo Wii vs. Sony Playstation 3: An Update

The future is bleak for Sony's Playstation 3.

The BBC reported last week that the European release of the Sony Playstation 3 will be delayed until March 2007.  This not only means that Sony will miss the highly profitable holiday season, but it will most definitely lose out in profits to the Nintendo Wii and XBox 360, which was released last year.

According to Ken Kutaragi, head of Sony's global computer and entertainment division,

"Mr Kutaragi blamed the European delay on problems in mass producing elements of the high-definition Blu-ray disc drives in the machines."

Sony still plans to release the new game console on November 11 in Japan and November 17 in the US, but due to the delayed European release, its sales forecast for the year has been cut in half: Sony only expects to sell 2 million units by the end of the year, down from its original estimate of 4 million.  The production problems have caused Sony officials to anticipate fewer units available for the American and Japanese release of the system, with just 100,000 units being made available for the Japanese launch and 400,000 available for the American launch.  This is the second time the release of PS3 has been significantly delayed: original plans scheduled the release of the console in the spring of this year, but other problems with Blu-ray technology prevented this early release.

All these problems encountered by Sony in the creation of the PS3 has led me to believe the Sony might be trying to do to much.  While Nintendo has focused on creating a relatively simple, yet creative, video game system, Sony has tried to incorporate too many technologies in the PS3. As a result, the production is difficult, and the final product is prohibitively expensive.  In fact, SciTech Today recently reported that, "The next-generation console for gaming enthusiasts is the Wii-60," said Penny Arcade comic strip writer Jerry Holkins, alluding to the prospect of buying both the Nintendo and Microsoft consoles for around the price of a PlayStation 3."  In November, Sony reported a release price for the PS3 of $499 and $599 for the two different versions of the console.

After all, do we really need a video game system that aims to cure the world's diseases?

According to Information Week, researchers at Stanford University plan to use the extended capabilities of the PS3 for research on Alzheimer's, Cancer, and Huntington's Disesase as part of the Folding@Home Project:

They plan to use the cell processor power of Playstation3 to perform calculations for the Folding@Home project, which simulates protein behavior to give scientists clues about the disease process. The molecular simulation project allows researchers to study Alzheimer's Disease, Huntington's Disease and some cancers.

This is all truly fantastic, but possibly a bit over the top. I think the Nintendo Wii has a much better strategy.  Beyond it's crazy new controller, it's modus operandi has been, for the most part, "keep it simple, stupid".

Nintendo is sticking to it's strengths and is using the Wii to link up its older products.  It seems like Nintendo is trying to win back original fans with the Virtual Console, which allows users to download and play games from older verions of Nintendo and Sega. For GameCube fans, the Wii console will be backwardly compatible with GameCube discs. It's also building on the success of the Nintendo DS and DS Lite by giving the Wii the ability to connect to the Web, and by making the Wii wirelessly compatible with the DS.

An official release date and price are expected to be announced by the end of this week, but rumors are indicating that the Wii console will sell for no more than $170 in the US, and will be released no later than November 24, 2006.  Encouraging is the fact that the microprocessors that will power the Wii have been shipped by IBM…which is more than Sony has done.

UPDATE 9/15/2006: Nintendo has officially announced that the release date of the Wii in the US will be November 19, and the price will be $250, which is higher than original estimates hinted.  Perhaps the PS3 delay has something to do with the higher-than-expected price: less competition means more people will buy the Wii because of lack of another choice.  See this BBC article for a summary.

I read an interesting article about the backlash against the PS3 pricing at the Penny Arcade Expo.  Basically, people have figured out you can potentially buy a Wii and an Xbox for the same price as a PS3.  They are referring to is as the Wii-60.

I have been enjoying my 360 for months now, I really dont see how either of these can be enough of an improvement to be worth the extra wait.  I think the time is right for Sony to lose some market share.

    hi erin! woop woop

  4. nintendoboy

so whats this that Playstationg 3 is coming out before the Nintendo Wii?  I thought the Wii was going to beat the PS3 to the market…the Wii is going to dominate

the playstation 3 is good how r u going to play that wii controller u need two controlls for the wii u need the analog stick and the controller that is so weard and the x-box 360 is good but not better than the playstation 3i rate playstation 3 1st,x-box 360 2nd,and the wii in 3rd place because of its kid games.

  6. Andres

i beg to differ i think the Wii will do excellent in the market the reason because when xbox 360 came it was like $600 and when the Ps3 comes out it will also be expensieve but when the Wii comes out it will only be $249.99 and more people will buy that since its cheaper and incrdibly new and parents will buy it for their kids at christmas i think Wii will dominate the market

  7. ethan

does the nintendo wii have blu ray?

  8. Anthony

Okay, first Nintendo is not meant for kids or not kid games, the fact is who has the money adults, its aiming towards kids but also adults. PS3 basically sucks, no disrespect, but when you think of it they just thinking of one thing MONEY. If they weren’t they wouldn’t be packing it with a shit load of crap, systems were made to be played with not to listen music, watch movies, etc. The 360 has come out already and if you really think hard about it, it’s not selling a lot. When you look at the Wii the first thing you should be thinking is “Tight”. Its affordable, will play tight games, and helping us play games in a NEW way, but still affordable. And it’s all it should be doing. Game cube was a putdown, DS and lite TIGHT!! Wii is going to be Tight!

the playstation 3 has stats that would kick the xbox 360s butt. however the things put into the ps3 run well over 1000 dollars. the 600 dollar price tag isn’t that bad. i just hope that over the next 2 or 3 years that its price lowers. the WII will DOMINATE and RULE!!!

  10. wii ftw!!

“does the nintendo wii have blu ray?”

Who cares about blu-ray, really? All that it achieves is a higher price tag for the console and the games. No average parent would be able to afford one for their child and thus only a man living with his mother still, can affor it. Whereas the wii is a cheap, fun and original console for all the family to play. Plus Ps3 loses money on each console made as does the xbox 360, where wii is the only one making money.

  11. sumperson

How is the wii making money and the other two systems not?

    (wii rocks!)

  12. gamer543

I agree with you all but I think all the game counsels are good. It is just what the gamer wants. If you want to play halo and halo 2 you go out and buy the x box 360 it has all the features of a ps3 except for blu ray technology. If your that type of person who wants a whole home entertainment sytem and want the best graphics go out and buy the ps3. It has everything a person that is crazy about having the greatest entertaiment system on the block. Now if you want to just play classic games and get your family in on it you should buy a wii. I think that if you want a great game counsel that will make you, your family and your wallet happy get the wii but if you can afford to get the ps3 or the x box 360 go and get those.

  13. nintendoboy

Most of the people on this site have not reasearched the other consoles, you can tell because of the false information provided, and if they did research then they would have realized that te PS3 is the best console to get.

  14. nintendoboy

Also what i said earlier about the wii rulling, well i lied the PS3 rules! Its the best console out there.

  15. nintendoboy

The kid Anthony who made an entry on October 7th, 2006 at 10:19 pm has all his facts wrong and does not have a clue about buisness nor game consoles, so whenever he writes something just ignore him (no disrespect), also when he said the console was “TIGHT” he was wrong. He is also wrong about the wii being for adults its for little kids. Nintendo’s purpose for making this system is to get FAT over excesive gameplayers (especially little kids) to move around like a bunch of pansys.

I totally think that Nintendo Wii is the best in the market. First of all, I’m a old Gamecube fan, so I’m already rooting for nintendo. Second of all, like many people said, all PS3 has is Blu-Ray compatibility. It’s a really confusing console which has a price tag as much as 5 PS2s. Introducing the PS3 at such a high price has driven people away at first sight, and Sony has lost it’s integrity. Now, Nintendo Wii, has many qualities that not only drives people to it, but drives people away from PS3 even more. It’s motion sensors have revolutionized video games for all eternity. And it’s kid-friendly games makes it an ideal choice for all ages 6+, while PS3 is more rated for 15+, which means Sony loses alot of customers. It’s games are also more interesting than PS3’s war and combofighting games. It’s price gave Wii a very good first impression. And if, what I have haerd, it’s graphics are about as same as the Gamecube, ti rocks since Gamecube has supergreat graphics. So it’s your choice. Do you want a kid-friendly, all- age rated, interactive, cheap console, or a overpriced, violent gamed, confusing console? Do the math, people.

You thnk the PS3 sucks thaddaeus well yo mamas so fat she nearly put Safeway out of business the only thing that’s attracted to her is gravity and her Uni graduation photo was an aerial also when she auditioned for a part in Raiders of the Lost Ark she got the part of the big Rolling Ball. Yo mama so hairy you almost died of rugburn at birth, Yo mama so hairy she look like she got Buchwheat in a headlock. And also Yo mamma is like a Christmas tree, everybody hangs there balls on her.

  18. nintendoboy

PS3 RULES!!!!!!!!!!!! WII SUCKS, NINTENDO CREATED IT FOR OVEREXCESIVE OVERWEIGHT KIDS TO MOVE AROUND LIKE A BUNCH OF PANSY’S.

  19. Scott

no…nintendo is aiming the wii at a much bigger crowd this time. they have typically been about games aimed at younger audiences, with a few more mature games. with 2 resident evil games on the way (one being a remake) and the incredible FPS abilities of the wii remote, they’ve taken a sharp turn in making games for everyone.
remember, you don’t need to go crazy, you can use simple wrist movements to play games.

  20. tm

which is better ps3 or xbox? — even though xbox has been out for a while now.

  21. Scott

it depends on what you are talking about by being better. i preffer the 360.
sony and microsoft’s visuals are very close this generation, but the ps3’s high price point could send it straight to hell.
the 360 has a much bigger library that will most likely grow just because it is doing well. a lot of people will buy it because of console exclusive titles (fable and halo)
it mostly depends on what you want out of your console. if you want a system with quite a few games and a few neat features, get a 360.
if you want a computer buy a ps3
if you want to have fun, buy a wii
    i have both a wii and a 360. i love tham both.

  22. j skafi

    wii sucks!
who wouldnt mind paying an additional 200 dollars to buy a ps3 system with the maximum technological devices ever discovered?
i watch hd movies, play hd games, browse theinternet, listen to music ,and view pictures …trust me,i live in lebanon, and i’ve braught the ps3 system for 900$,and i still consider such aprice cheap for such an amazing system.i even have a psp system, which provides me with a permanent connection with both systems.and that doubles the fun…

  23. jaafar

does the wii fit for 20gb?60gb?80gb?
does the 360 carry an HDMI drive?can both of them run games in HD?or can they play DVDs?i bet not
