[...] I found this story quite surprising given the general lack of participation online by Japanese politicians and the overall informal nature of blogging in Japan. For example, while many American companies use blogs as a tool for marketing, discussing corporate issues, or reaching out to customers, it is quite uncommon for Japanese corporations to have official blogs (we discovered this last year when we were researching the prevalence of corporate blogs here in the states). Similarly, when researching for our international political website study last year, we also read that while the Japanese were pioneers of using the web for political campaigns, this campaign tactic has fallen by the wayside–Japanese campaign websites were less common than their American counterparts. The health blog of ministers Takemi and Ishida are thus setting a great example for politicians seeking to use the web in new, interesting, and productive ways.
[...] I was excited to see The Bivings Report?#8217;s finding that half of the major public relations firms now have officially sanctioned blogs that they link to from their Websites. This is up from only 22% back in March. If anything is a measure of how far the blogosphere has penetrated into mainstream business culture, it?#8217;s the level to which communications professionals accept it as a major change in their industry.
Frank - you may be the first. I think Richard Edelman started in September 2004 and most of the others are newer than that. Have to look at that next time we do an update.

I would also agree that the Technorati ranks aren't that great of a measure for these kinds of blogs. As mentioned, most of these blogs aren't really trying to attract a like of links. They are written for specific audiences and not the greater blog world.

FWIW, Glass House (the Waggener Edstrom blog) is really not intended as a marketing tool but is more broadly focused on the changing nature of communications and our role in it. I started the blog and ran it for three years as an internal only blog, to help bring people along on what was going to be a wild ride. Screw the rankings, who has the first post? That's what I want to know! I've got 3/1 2003 in the archives....and since I lost the first year, that will have to do! Who's next? :)

Hi,We love to do those "ranking/research project" don't we..? I did one of Brussels based PR agencies last year in September. You would be amazed how few PR agencies use RSS to syndicate their content... And that in the city with the highest concentration of reporters per square meters. You can read the full post on my blog here: http://conversation.squarespace.com/journal/2005/9/10/majority-of-pr-agencies-in-brussels-do-not-use-rss.htmlPS: still working on my research of Belgian newspapers and their web 2.0 features use. Will keep you updated.
