Wii Injury Report

By now, we've all heard the unfortunate tales of injury and destruction that have come as a result of playing the Nintendo Wii. If you haven't, I suggest visiting Wii Have a Problem, a blog dedicated to reporting wacky Wii-related stories. The site has video footage of broken screens, ranging from laptop monitors to 40 inch LCDs; pictures of broken Wii remotes from overzealous bowlers, golfers, and batters; and yes, even reports of tennis elbow!

While most of us may find these stories amusing (if not hilarious), Nintendo seems to be taking them pretty seriously. The company had the foresight to include with the Wii a detailed safety manual, indicating that Nintendo predicted even the most bizarre of Wii-related injuries. Lucky for them, because if they hadn't, I assume they would be facing some pretty serious lawsuits. The safety manual warns against a variety of Wii-related dangers, including, among other things:

  • Seizures
  • Eye Strain
  • Motion Sickness
  • Console/TV Screen Damage

My personal favorite, though, is the warning that "The Wii console is a Class I laser product." Hold on, let me call Dr. Evil…I'm sure he'll want to hear about this.

These Wii-injuries are no joke. The Wall Street Journal published an article on November 25, "A Wii Workout: When Videogames Hurt", that discussed some inuries suffered by Wii fanatics, and even interviewed a doctor to get some advice on what to do about Wii-related aches and pains. According to the article, doctors advise Wii-users to "stretch out and be sure to take care of any injuries afterwards." Some Wii-players have even resorted to wearing athletic braces while playing Wii Sports. The WSJ article further reports that:

Nintendo itself warns players about this risk just before some of the games begin. A message flashes up on the screen saying: "Make sure there are no people or objects around you that you might bump into while playing." Some Wii games also have pop-up reminders every 15 minutes advising gamers to take a break.

Anyway, endless reports of injuries and TV damage are not stopping consumers from their Wii buying sprees. Since its launch on November 19, NexGenWars reports that Nintendo has already sold more than a million units in the US, although the site notes that this figure is only an estimate. In addition, the game system made its Japanese debut this weekend and was a major hit. Thousands of people were lined up at major electronics stores through the middle of the night in order to purchase the Wii. Many customers were very enthusiastic. One Japanese man even wore a home-made Wii remote control costume. When asked about his outfit, he replied, "I made this (costume) by myself yesterday. This is an homage to Nintendo."

According to BBC News, the Wii will go on sale in Europe December 8; Nintendo hopes to release 4 million units by the end of the year.

UPDATE (12/15/06):  I read on the BBC this morning that Nintendo has officially responded to the Wii-mote flimsy strap issues.  According to BBC, Nintendo will replace all broken wrist straps for the Wii-mote with a sturdier version free of charge.  In addition, all new Wii consoles will come with a much stronger wrist strap for the Wii-mote in order to prevent future problems.  You can order a replacement strap for your Wii-mote here on Nintendo's website .

Anyone that gets injured playing Wii is an idiot!! And anyone that is seriously considering suing Nintendo for their stupidity, has to be the most money hungry, pathetic, pile of trash known to man!!

I think if you do get hurt you should not be playing the game in the first place. if your that uncordinated to mave in one spot and get hurt from it your just stupid. The Wii games have warnings for you to follow if you chose to ignore them its your falt. Good thing the game creaters antisipated the publics move on being pathetic and not worthy of the gaming experience.

Hi, I’m chris laycock and I’m a gamer I’m 18 years old and i have never in my entire life have I witnessed something so pathetic then what i have on the vigor display of idiots. the people are so money hungry its worse then sewing Mc Donald’s from being fat. No shitt Mc Donald’s will make you fat if you eat it everyday. The Wii games are all physical and require only a little bit of hand and eye coordination. if you get hurt then your really retarded and don’t need the controller in your hand. I don’t know why people are trying to sue for being stupid and I don’t know why it makes me so mad maybe b/c I’m a experienced gamer duh you people are retarded.

What a load of rubbish. It seems most probable the people who are complaining and had “injuries” are most probably PlayStation and XBox supporters and just want to have a go of Nintendo’s magnificent creation!

Gaming has come a long way since my childhood when the sweetest thing was watching to paddles slide back and forth on a black screen all the while bouncing a square block to and fro in a sort of fake tennis match. Long gone are the days of chasing little blue ghosts around a maze or saving the humanoids with your unidirectional star craft from an impending onslaught descending from the heavens.

Now in this day and age gaming is about first person shooters and MMORPG and selling items on E-bay. One thing has not changed in all that time.

Where your rear end is during the entirety of game play.

In this country of even expanding waistlines (including my own) and lethargic attitudes its good to see a system that actually encourages you get up and move around far more than just sitting on your duff.

Reports of injury and the general havoc caused by overzealous players maybe well founded and a cause for some mild alarm, but are never the less simply players who still are accustomed to being stationary while playing.

As a suggestion allow me to remind the average gamer of a few things:

1.The Wiimote comes with a strap for a reason. Try using it. Should it break or be damaged in some fashion that would result in the possible damage to property or persons around you. Then go get a replacement strap.
2.If a causal gamer or even the serious gamer has developed physical aliments from playing the system (aside from those caused by visual stimulation) then I would recommend you get out more. Exercise is a good thing. That is one of those things that the Wii is indirectly promoting. You are working out folks, you should remember that and take the necessary steps to ensure that you prepare adequately. (Stretch once in a while and know when to take a break and walk away.)
3.With the cost of the X-Box 360 still in the $400 and up range and the cost of the PS3 at almost absurd levels there is no wonder the Wii has taken off so well. Don’t go griping how you think it sucks just cause you have to get up off the sofa and actually put forth some physical effort to play a game once in a while.

There was a time when the some of the worst injuries you could get while gaming was hyper-ventilating from blowing down the cartridge or that ever painful divot in your thumb from making Mario run as fast as he could. Or worse yet, your butt falling asleep from playing for far to long into the night.

I enjoy my X-box and I still love my PS2, heck I’ll defend my Game Cube just for the sake of getting to play Animal Crossing when no one is looking. I am looking forward to getting a Wii for this coming Christmas. If not for trying something different that helps me loose a pound or two then for the true call of the system.

    Zelda.

It’s very interesting reading some of the comments left here by other gamers! some of which are illiterate and then have the nerve to call someone retarded!! how very mature!

I am a gamer myself and have been for many a year, not only am I a gamer, but I also keep fit! … however despite all this I still managed to pull a muscle in my arm playing the wii. I think it would be fair to say the very idea of the wii is bound to cause the odd injury or two! however does this mean your going to sue. Well no, injuries happen all the time! it’s just bad luck and lets be honest the wii does come with warnings.

Therefore I would say it is just a matter of being aware of how you are likely to cause yourself some damage and adapt your playing style accordingly to avoid! …. which as im sure any gamer will tell you is extremely differcult especially when you find yourself deeply involved in a game!! i.e. wii sports!! its hard not to swing the controller hard as if it was a baseball bat whilst playing baseball!!!

i have a horrible pain in my right arm.
i think its from wii. while playing wii you actually use more force than you would if you were really playing any of the game. example; when you play tennis is real life you place it and set you body up and hit it with the appropriate strength, in wii you hit it as hard as possible at the opponent. same with baseball if your really playing theres an actual force coming at you to slow down your swing, in wii. well you just hope to hit a homerun with that swing.
i would never consider suing nintendo though. that might be one of the stupidest things i ever heard. if you get hurt you should probably tone it down a notch. now with me having and injured arm i’m upset cuz i can no longer play as well but it’ll get better and afterwards i’ll probably hurt it again. or maybe its making me stronger. who knows ?
but i mean i’m not gonna ever say you cant get hurt playing wii. :)
