Todd - I actually began getting texts from the Obama campaign two weeks ago, and I immediately called <em>and</em> emailed them to tell them to C&D.

I <em>do</em> get charged $.25 for each text I receive. Personally, I would rather get emails that 1) I can choose whether or not to open and read, and 2) that are free.

More than anything, what irritated me about the Obama text messages was that there was no way to opt out (although since my call and email, I haven't received any more).

Brian - I actually don't think having just the phone number is that big deal. In all cases you'll have the area code, which will allow you to send location specific content. For example, I've gotten messages from the Obama campaign about rallies in my area. In addition, texts have to be abbreviated due to the character limits, so people don't usually waste time addressing people by name, etc. in their normal text messages. So even if you did have a lot of data you could use to personalize things I don't think you'd have the space to do it.

Regarding Graff's article, I did see it. I was actually contacted by the Times the day after it ran, which leads me to think the piece I was quoted in was a follow up of some sort.

I saw the article yesterday and thought your quote was good. Thanks for publishing the rest of the discussion.

I am curious - do you feel that that only having the cell phone number - not the name, zip code (since cell phone numbers don't necessarily correspond to where the person lives) or any other identifying information - is a limitation? Text messaging lacks the personalization that has proven to be so effective in some of the more traditional online engagement options. Interested in your thoughts.

(Also, I thought it was interesting that the New York Times still published an article about the text messaging announcement when their editorial page had featured an op-ed by Garrett Graff over the weekend addressing some of the same issues. Did you see his piece?
